Director of Planning

Job Description

Smith Brothers Agency seeks a Director of Strategic Planning and Research. The Director is responsible for leading the development of strategic brand plans for agency clients and the identification of high potential target, brand and competitive insights that inspire compelling brand stories.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in quantitative and qualitative research methodology, including experience with brand trackers, ethnographies, shop-a-longs and copy testing. You will be skilled at identifying best research methodologies to gain insights that address marketing challenges as well as converting those insights into inspiring creative briefs.

Partnering with other agency leaders, you will be responsible for developing trusted advisor relationships with senior client and prospect leaders. You will be a consistent contributor to thought leadership from the agency, and as a discipline leader, you will be a key mentor to agency staff and contributor to agency culture.

Reports to: President

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analysis of client brand marketing challenges
  • Audits of existing research and recommendations for additional research to fill knowledge gaps
  • Identification and management of best-in-class research suppliers
  • Crafting compelling strategic recommendations, brand positioning statements, creative strategies and briefs
  • Making the agency's work more creative and effective
  • Developing trusted consultant relationships with senior brand management
  • Convincing presentation of your perspectives
  • Active contributor to agency thought leadership and culture

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 10+ years in brand planning on client or agency side
  • Deep experience in brand, consumer and advertising research
  • Experience in consumer package goods vertical a big plus
  • Exceptional strategic and creative thinker
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Experience in analytics, ability to interpret data and in expressing data insights as strategic opportunities
  • Ability to lead client brand teams and agency client teams
  • Strong work ethic. Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours Ability to travel (up to 15% of time on job)
